Much like other Ubisoft games, Skull and Bones has a proper in-game trading system, where players can participate, buy, and sell goods. One such instance is Opium and Rum Smuggling, done through Helm, an in-game smuggling operation – trade of smuggled goods. Understanding the concept can take some time, but following the Opium Smuggling and Helm Guide, you can catch up to the concept quite quickly.
What is Helm in Skull and Bones?
Helm is a smuggling operation that deals in the trade of smuggled/explicit goods like Opium, Rum, and so on. The game terms them “Smuggled Resources”.
Progressing through the storyline, you will encounter a Tavern, where you meet Yanita Nara. She is the representative and head of the Helm.
By talking to Yanita – Manager of Le Pong Muet, you can take these goods, and sell them for pieces of eight.
Further, you can use these pieces of eight to buy materials, named weapons, furniture, tattoos, and other cool stuff in the game.
Skull and Bones Smuggling
Smuggling Opium – Telok Penjarah
Progressing further down the story, and doing the Helm missions, the game will eventually lead you to the second Helm at the Telok Penjarah Pirate Den.
This is also the same location, where you will Smuggle Opium.
Smuggling Rum – Red Isle
Understanding the concept, if you go through the main storyline in Skull and Bones, the game will unlock the first smuggling hub – Helm, in the Red Isle. This is the same location where you meet Yanita Nara.
At this Helm specifically, you can Smuggle Rum, and make a profit off of it.
- Follow the main story to unlock Red Isle Helm to Smuggle Rum
- Follow Helm missions to unlock Telok Penjarah Helm used to Smuggle Opium

How to get Opium and Rum Materials (Poppy/Sugar Cane)?
Reach the Helm, and don’t be agile or quick with further progression.
Do the basic missions to reach the second area. A supply and demand mini-game will start in the Helm office.
Supply Chain – Liaisons
Use Supply Network early on: The Liaisons Tab will tell you about the Supply Deal (going and picking the supply up).
The Supply Deals are usually near one another, so you can see the map towards the right, and pick up all the contracts you can that are close to one another.
These are “Dailies”, meaning they appear daily here in the Supply Network Liaisons Tab. Do them daily to get materials for Opium and Rum in Skull and Bones.
Roving ones are the moving targets that you have to catch up to, but they are quite hard to handle.
In short: You can call it “exchange of money for materials”, and it is the best early method to earn profit “pieces of eight” from smuggling in Skull and Bones.
Supply Chain – Attacks
On the contrary, the Attacks Tab deals with missions that are more aggressive or have a fighting factor involved in them.
These include Hunting, Plunder, Forts, and so on. It is not the optimum choice, but gets you thrilled if you are looking for fights.
These are also Dailies, meaning you have to do them daily to increase their levels and rewards.
You can get a ton of Poppies and Sugar Cane, as the former is used for Opium and the latter for Rum production.
Get as much as you can, because we are focusing on making more Opium and Rum for profits in Skull and Bones.
Making Opium and Rum in Skull and Bones
Moving further in the Helm, you come across Distillery, which is the parallel of Laboratory.
Here, you will be utilizing Poppy to make Opium, and Sugar Cane to make Rum. It does cost your silvers and takes a bit of your time to manufacture.
Important Note:
- Opium can only be manufactured in Telok Penjarah Pirate Den Helm
- Rum can only be manufactured in Red Isle Helm
- When you take an order mission, you can’t fast-travel at all, so don’t pick one up if you don’t want to do it immediately
- Gather as many supplies of materials and final products as you can in your storage
Selling Opium and Rum for Profit – Smuggling
The owner of the Helm – Yanita Nara is the one who trades in the Smuggled Materials. After going through the three-step process to gain Opium and Rum, you can talk to her and sell them for a profit.

The Verdict
Skull and Bones shifts the typical in-game smuggling, black marketing, and trading concept, into the Helm mechanism.
There are dens where the head of the Helm lies, and taking to them will trigger the smuggling mechanism.
Smuggling Opium and Rum are some of the few early options of explicit/black market trading through the Helm mechanism.
But, Smuggling Opium unlocks by playing Helm missions till you reach Telok Penjarah Pirate Den Helm, and Smuggling Rum unlocks at the Red Isle Helm, where you meet Yanita Nara.
This is a three-step process:
- Doing daily contracts to earn Poppy and Sugar Cane, or other materials
- Producing Opium and Rum in the Distillery
- Smuggling Opium and Rum – Selling to Helm leaders at the den, like Yanita Nara
